While some people buy RVs in order to travel with loved ones or groups of friends, there are plenty of intrepid adventurers who prefer to travel by themselves. If you’re one of those people, then you’ll want to know some ways to keep yourself safe.
One of the advantages of traveling in a group is simply that there is safety in numbers, so you won’t have that benefit. However, there are plenty of other ways you can ensure your safety during your journeys in your RV and we’ve outlined some of these below.
Don’t Get Stranded
Not being completely by yourself in the wilderness is the ideal. The further away you are from other people, the more danger you’re in. You don’t want to get lost on a hiking trip with no hope of rescue or stuck with a broken RV in an area that’s outside of cell service.
Try to plan your camping trips so that you’re within distance of some people or at least a nearby town. Campgrounds are typically fairly safe places to stay, rather than boondocking in the woods.
Establish a Contact Point
You’ll also want to leave your contact information and travel plans with a trusted neighbor, friend, or family member back at home. Try to check in with this person at regular intervals so they know that you’re safe. If you fail to report to them at the appointed time, they can figure out how to get help to your location.
Look Like You’re Not Alone
One way you can be less vulnerable is to give the impression that you’re with other people. It can be helpful to make it seem as though you aren’t alone in your camper, by setting up more than one lawn chair outside or adding another pair of shoes by the door. Some people even bring their big dogs who can alert them to danger!
